Ch. 1 A Dream...No, A Living Nightmare

Vergil walked down the street, happy as could be, and why shouldn’t he? The sun was shining, casting its golden rays upon the earth. The sky was a clear light blue for as far as the eye could see, and then there was the people. Every person that he walked past smiled and waved at him.

"Hi Vergil, its good to see you."

"V, we should get some drinks later."

"Oh Vergil...call me."

He grinned and continued down the crowded street until an explosion of color appeared in the corner of his eye. Over to the left was a beautiful assortment of wild flowers. They were blue, green, purple, yellow, and every other color of the rainbow. He walked over to smell them, but as soon as he came close the flowers began to wilt. As he came closer the plants turned brown. Their decayed petals fell off and drifted away in the wind.

The sky suddenly grew dark, and the gentle breeze swiftly turned into a gale. Instantly the once cheerful and friendly greetings of people turned into screams of fear and cries of agony.

Vergil spun around and his jaw dropped. He was the only one left, the only one left alive that is. All around him bodies were strewn about. Men, women, and children...everyone of them were brutally slashed open, many had bite marks and missing limbs. Their cold lifeless eyes stared at him, revealing the horror they witnessed as they drew their final breath. Blood flowed down the street like a river of death.

He looked down at his hands and gasped. They were his, but not human. The skin was black and leathery. Claws existed were fingers should be, but worst of all they were stained a dark crimson.

The howling wind sounded as if it was mocking him. "Monster...How could you?...Fiend..."

"No...no...NO!" Clamping his hands over his now pointed ears Vergil ran to escape the ghastly scene, but every road he took, every turn he made had the same thing. Just more and more bodies with the wind to mock him. He stopped in front of a window to catch his breath. He looked in side, and in the reflection he saw a pair of ferocious blood red eyes glaring at him.

Vergil jolted awake. Sweat ran down his face. His heart and head pounded in unison as his whole body shook. With a trembling hand he reached for a pill bottle, knocking over the lamp and alarm clock in the process.

It took him over a minute, but when he finally removed the cap he closed his eyes and downed the contents. Dropping the empty bottle on the floor next to its fallen brethren he laid back down just in time for the alarm to go off.

He staggered out of bed then into the bathroom. He turned on the sink and splashed water on his face. The cold felt good on his boiling skin. He looked into the mirror and those same blood red eyes looked back at him. After a few deep breaths the eyes slowly changed from red to their normal green color. He sighed. "Looks like its going to be one of those days."
