Emanuel Rios was born with ophthalmia neonatorum -- A degenerative corneal disease that ultimately causes blindness if untreated.

He ultimately lost his sight at the age of 7.

His family could not afford to send him to a school for blind children, so he never got an education. Instead, Emanuel learned how to play the Spanish Lute, at a young age, and panhandled on the street.

For as long as he knew, he lived life as a begger.
