A farmer's child, the birth of a female is not celebrated. They are called "little slaves" as they grow because a son brings property to a household, but a woman leaves to be with a husband. Structures are rigid, for traditions date back thousands of years. Every thing must maintain a proper place in the Li--a harmony of nature. A woman must obey a man, and follow a husband.
But Kathryn could not. She was more intelligent than most and abhorred submission to simple, stupid farmer's boys. She had but one recourse: a monastery. By becoming a nun, she could escape being a housekeeper. She could learn to be an artist, a poet. She could learn the Classics of literature, and the philosophy of Buddha, and the Five Forms of Gong Fu (Kung Fu). Finally, Kai Ren would not be limited by her sex, and she would be no one's property as long as she stayed a nun.
Since she had skills in English, she left China with her teacher as he tried to establish a monastery in the western world and teach all who desired the wisdom of harmony.
