Niv-Mizzet is the parun of the Izzet League, the guild of inventors, chemisters and all seekers of knowledge on the world of Ravinica. No one is quite sure how he came to be, but by best guess he may be over 15,000 years old, making him the oldest living thing known to Ravnica. His personal merits include a myriad of useful inventions and discoveries that aid the various guilds today, none less than the metal mizzium, a substance nearly indestructible by nature, but for those with the proper knowledge, it is quite easy to create and shape. He is aligned with both red and blue mana, and could be characterized as somewhat of a self obsessed, narcissistic being, and many outside the Izzet League have likened the guild to the Cult of Rakdos, in that the near godlike reverance of their leader is due to the cult of personality surrounding them.

Knowledge in all it's forms, and the general pursuit of knowledge. Niv is ever obsessed with understanding the deeper mysteries of the universe itself, and anything that he thinks could be key to unraveling the true nature of space and time.

The members of the Orzhov Syndicate, a guild he regards to be no more than a cult of religious fanaticism bent to serve the Ghost Council.
