For the most part, he has grew up with a regular lifestyle. His parents were ordinary in every regard, his friends were ordinary in every regard, and his routine was regular in every regard. That isn't to say that everything went generically; everyone has a few tosses and turns in life that set them straight on who they are, and who they're going to be. In Cole's case, it was having to move house quite often due to his mother's job. His father - although ordinary - wasn't actually present for a good portion of his young life, and so has very little bearing on who he is. But that's besides the point. Yes, his mother was often travelling due to her job in insurance sales. He doesn't quite understand what it is she does, but whatever it is, it ends up with them moving house every few years or so.

Due to his inability to stay firmly rooted to the ground, he has had to make many friends and lose them almost as quickly. It had just gotten to be a routine at this point, only making temporary friends until the next batch arrive. This is no longer the case, however, as his studies have planted him firmly in the ground at his dormroom for school. No longed tied to his mother in terms of location.
