Born in the Black Forest in Germany and raised in an American university by his parents, the genius Professor Abe Gawain and the prodigal martial artist Susan Gawain, Johan has led a life encouraging great mental and phyiscal prowess.

Johan's father discovered Johan having sex with a boy a month before he died in a car accident. Though they did not speak much for that time period, Professor Gawain did accept his son for what he is a mere three days before the tragic accident.
