Chronautius has lived a great number of years, and he no longer cares to attempt to try and remember his age. In his youth he spent his time among his own kind, a noble race of selfless guardians. He was taught the philosophies of the metallic dragons (hydragyrum), drawn up many millenia before his time. These ideas formed the basis of his thinking as he aged. When he had reached young adult status among his peers, he was instructed in the arts of non lethal combat, learning to use his natural weapons and breath weapon to injure and incapacitate the enemy rather than kill them. (His kind believed that each life had the potential to learn from their mistakes.)
Shortly after Chronautius completed his training (reaching adult status), he was thrown into climactic war. (His species were primarily guardians of various people of import. It wasn't long before they made enemies). The enemy opted for the complete destruction of his entire race. Though well trained and powerful, their honor and moral based ideals were their downfall against their cunning and sneaky enemy. (assassins were the main threat and killed the majority of the Mercurial dragons).
Chronautius had been bonded to a feline prince at the time the conflict began. (The felid anthro had chosen him seemingly at random, though Chronautius never did find out). The princes city was attacked without warning, and taken within a few hours. though he had opted to take the enemy by himself and spare the city the prince insisted that Chronautius should flee and survive. Chronautius refused at first, unable to break his oath to defend his chosen, but the Prince knew that Chronautius would perish along with the rest of his race.
Chronautius opted for survival, gritting his teeth to avoid fighting the crusading forces. The genocidal armies were eventually dealt with by the various anthro nations after several cities were attacked to kill the mercurial dragons. He recalls very little of the years after the war, spending most of his time defending those in need. Without a family, he now wanders trying to find a place in the world, and hoping to redeem himself for cowering among ruins and caves instead of fighting to save his kind.
