Malloy was never intended to be as central a character as he's become, but I'm enough of a capitalist to recognize when something sells. Malloy was very popular with the audience in the story series where he first appeared, which is why I kept him around, giving him a few chapters of his own to explore him more fully.

He's one of the most fascinating characters I've ever written, partly because he's such a cliché, in some respects. He's that hard-nosed badass with a sliver of humanity that fuels so many action flicks, but at the same time, he's nearly kaleidoscopic in his flexibility.

Different people have read so many different things into his personality; it never ceases to astonish me. When I showed Malloy to Susan van Camp, she immediately saw a 'hard-boiled detective' -- nothing's farther from the truth, but I was so curious to see what she'd produce that I couldn't bring myself to correcting her!
